Ok here’s the skinny on how to make paper from Hemp. You’ll need 2 books… 1) The empereror wears no clothes and 2) Hemp Horizons. Essentially if you’re growing hemp for paper you’ll grow a medium density population on the fields. Probably about 150 lbs of seed per acre but I suggest you look up the Industrial Hemp Guidelines in Canada at http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-98-156/index.html.
Once you grow the hemp until September then you have to cut it down and collect it in stacks, kind of like wheat. It has to ret for a month to allow the Hurd to separate from the stalk. “Retting” allows the cellulose to separate from the fibrous exteriour. You need dewy mornings to allow the retting to take place. Then you need a hemp breaker to crack the stalk and release the hurds. As for any special paper mill equipment, any typical paper mill uses vats of acid to decompose the usual tree cellulose. Since hemp hurds are much smaller anyway and no mechanical crunching of huge tree trunks is necessary.
Hemp hurds will readily digest in acidic vats and the rest of the paper making process would be ultimately the same. Maybe you could visit a paper mill that produces the type and quality of paper you seek to produce. The process of making paper from hemp is essentially the same as from trees the devil is in the details of what type of paper you are seeking to produce. A visit to a similar end product paper mill will iron out the finishing/rolling equipment specificities.

Regarding setting up a factory or mill for hemp paper, from the research I have done there is small conversion needed to change a pulp paper mill to a hemp mill.
Now in saying this I live in the east coast of Canada and work in forestry. The amount of mills that have been shut down leave many places around here to buy and convert to a hemp paper facility.
The infrastructure here, but unfortunately so is the ignorance…

I am the founding director of a newly registered NPO in South Africa (Abundance) and an entrepreneur. I know absolutely nothing about producing paper but have a good understanding of recruiting the right people and motivating them to achieve an agreed upon goal. The goal of my NPO is to provide women and children with workshops on various sustainable development projects with a main focus on the interdisciplinary science of permaculture. This will ultimately empower them with food security, electricity and income. The only problem with this model is that the income comes last. So I have had the idea of trying to find an old mill close to one of my target communities and convert it into a hemp paper producing mill. The profits from this mill will then in tern fuel sustainable economic growth on a wider scale through the broader community, thus becoming completely self sustained unit. Government grants take years to manifest into real money after they have been granted and international donors are wary of the South African fat cats that feed their own pockets before the hungry. I would like to change the approach to empowering the poor by starting a company that has the sole purpose of funding the communities around it. In fact, it seems to be one of the few options we have left.
There are two reasons I am reaching out to you; the first being that I would be very grateful if you could provide me with information you gathered in your research about converting mills into hemp mills… and secondly (in the longer term) my wife and I would love to live in Canada for a few years. We both have family and friends there and starting up a similar project would be a great way to spend our time there. Any help or advice or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking at starting up a hemp growing project in South Africa, for the purpose of generating revenue for eco-social isues. I am purchasing 10 acres of land. While I have two partners who were colleagues of mine while I served in the Peace Corps in Africa… they are natives, amazing farmers, brilliant, determined, motivated etc etc… I don’t know much about hemp for example-
1. How, where to purchase seed
2. How much 10 acres could yield/produce
3. What would be some pros and cons
any other advice, suggestions etc. Could be looking for potential collaboration, partnership etc as well.

Really thankful to have found you all. I am very much interested in seeing this crop being restored to it’s rightful owners,….us. God gave us all the seeds that grows all the plants, and He gave us all the water that makes the plants grow…how can any individual or govt have the say over who gets to plant one of God’s seeds that He gave to each of us? No need to look to man’s politics, when God’s Provision (the seed) has already given us permission TO GROW. Peace.
No Prius for me, I am waiting for the revival of Ford’s hemp car. I am finishing my MBA with a certificate in Sustainable Resources. Hemp will hopefully be coming back to the states, we need alternatives. It is great to see all this interest. I’m for helping out with the sale of hemp paper.
I am an enthusiastic supporter of industrial hemp production primarily due to the drastically lessened environmental impact of its production as a base crop with mulitple applications. As an an environmental scientist currently employed to safeguard Tribal water resources (groundwater, surface water, and watershed hydrology) I have to ask what the by products of hemp processing are. I believe wholeheartedly that globally we must move away from forest products, chemical applications for pest controls and fertilizers and harsh, contaminant-laden production methods. My concern is that in the blossoming of this Earth-friendlier crop production and processing, folks move with a clear understanding of the total environmental impact. Clearly hemp requires far less than other crops to grow, clearly hemp as a replacement for forest products is eminently reasonable, and clearly the applications of this amazing plant are far wider than any other single crop plant. Yet the transport from farming location to mill, processing at the mill, the processing into fibers, cloth, paints, oils etc.–all of these bear environemtnal impacts as well. So, what are the by-products generated by the production process of hemp to paper, to cloth, to oil? How much water does it take in each of the various processes? How much petroleum based fuel or coal-produced electricity will it require to produce hemp based materials? What are the total inputs–renewable and non-renewable–needed to produce one reem of white hemp paper? One barrel of hemp-oil? One bolt of un-bleached hemp cloth? Where can I find such information?

I’m here in NoCal too. I was just thinking about the very thing you guys are talking about (except for specifically making TP, but I like the idea) from a little different angle. Brendan, I think cannabis will be legalized for personal use the next time it’s on the ballot, when it does industrial hemp will be legalized too. I think laying the ground work for when that happens now is beneficial. To that end, what about developing relationship and partnerships with some central California municipalities that have been hard hit by this recession. Think about it, all are agriculture towns & have ag infrastructure and expertise in place. All have buildings and other transportation & processing facilities that are currently empty and not being used. They all have populations with extremely high unemployment rates that would provide experiences agriculture labor. I bet these municipalities would be willing to offer incentives for a “new” industry like this. I’m glad to see the interest. I have 25 acres in Northern CA and would love to plant hemp. To transport this to a CA or Pacific NW paper processing facility would be great. Toilet paper is the way to go. Who knows how to operate the machinery for production, packaging. Who handles marketing. If it isn’t legal in the US to grow industrial hemp can it be cost effective to import fiber from Canada for production in US? We need to crunch the numbers.

I’ve heard that hemp is better for paper and it’s alot more enviromentaly friendly. 1 acre of hemp can make many times more paper than an acre of trees.

Comentarles que en estos momentos, hemos desarrollado unos METODOS de enriamiento de las fibras de cáñamo, que nos han permitido, darle mayor suavidad y así, llegar a obtener unas fibras que son admitidas por las maquinas de Cardas del Algodón, o de Lino, etc. obtenido las mechas que nos permiten estirar hasta obtener el hilo textil del Cáñamo Industrial, y podemos hilar en estos momentos los calibres de N16 a N30.
Aceptamos un mínimo de 40 hectáreas, para que el agricultor haga sus pruebas con diferentes semillas, ya que según el clima de la zona, algunas se desarrollan mejor que otras, pero estoy buscando más de 300 hectáreas, por zonas.
Después de las pruebas, tenemos dos referencias importantes, la primera por parte nuestra, saber qué tipo de semilla se germina mejor, y el rendimiento de la tierra por hectárea y la segunda para el agricultor, que ve la rentabilidad económica de su producción.
Dispongo del mejor precio de la semilla, certificada para su uso legal en Europa en la transformación del Cáñamo Industrial en sus diferentes materias primas, además de la Maquinaria con la tecnología para la Siega y para su procesamiento.
Lo más importante es que firmamos un contrato de transformación, donde al agricultor le aseguramos la comercialización del total de la materia prima, obtenida por las maquinas procesadoras de nuestra fabrica, acordamos un precio mínimo por su producto, para garantizar el beneficio al agricultor, pero pueden varias a mejor, según mercado, podríamos hablar de unos beneficios aproximados de 4000 a 5000 euros por hectárea, de dos campañas al año, para el agricultor, siempre que se hagan cosas correctas.

I’m in! So far I’ve done heaps of research, but there doesn’t appear to be much in the way of pulp/paper mills at all. I’m sure there is Provincial and Federal funding, but having trouble finding actual numbers related to cost…Feel free to contact me anytime.

I have been trying to convince the current administration in Maine that the failing paper mills could bring the rest of us out of this local recession by transforming our paper mills to make a new form of carbon fiber paper that could be used in place of products like plywood, partical board, sheathing, insulation. Other products such as plastic to steel, formed or pressed and the list just goes on and on…

I am willing to learn and work hemp. Would be very eager to start right away. I will be starting my own production if noone has project in the beginning stages. Would like to have some partners.
Want to start a hemp farm have 100’s of acres in Northern California. Shasta County and Tehama county. Is it conceivable, would like investors or even help to begin farming process. Will grow custom orders or specific. Just in gestation process. Greatest northstate weather along the river. I just know it would flourish. Seeking interested investors, people to supply or somone to help guide me in the farming process. Really open for suggestions. Want to comply with laws. All that. If anyone wants to throw in two cents, its for the good of all! Respectfully

Hi Rich, You’re not too far from where I live. If there is a papermill near by and we can grow the fiber well, all we need are the skills to manufacture the paper. The old paper mill I’m refering to is the one note sent by Kathleen. I will contact her after I finish replying to you. My question is how to convert this mill from paper to hemp and how to use this mill to manufacture toilet paper. Any ideas? Joey

Have you made in progress. I am also very interested in a paper/fiber processing and production facility.
There is an old Paper mill about 12 miles from where your farm is! That is in response the farmer Rich~!
Hey Kathleen, What’s up with the old paper mill? I would love to manufacture toilet paper most of all. Could this mill be used for that?
