Buds for Brewing?

I am a commercial brewer in Rhode Island. I was wondering if there are any manufactures of THC-free buds? I know that it is a distant cousin of hops, and I am trying to find a viable producer to supply enough to use in batches of legal beer!

  1. I have studied this issue. First of all, to make beer, you need hemp seed cake — the residue left over after the seeds have been pressed for oil. You do not need “buds”. Secondly, using buds, even without THC, is still illegal according to the UN Single Convention Treaty on Drugs. So “buds” fall outside of the definition of industrial hemp. Here in Australia, we are not allowed to remove the buds or the leaves from the fields. I would contact one of the hemp food/oil manufacturers in Canada for hemp cake prices (i.e. Nutiva). Here are the relevant laws articles from the Single Convention: Relevant Articles Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961, As amended by the 1972 Protocol amending the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961. Article 1, para. 1, subpara b) “Cannabis” means the flowering or fruiting tops of the cannabis plant (excluding the seeds and leaves when not accompanied by the tops) from which the resin has not been extracted, by whatever name they may be designated. Article 28, Paragraph 2: This Convention shall not apply to the cultivation of the cannabis plant exclusively for industrial purposes (fibre and seed) or horticultural purposes. Article 36, Paragraph 1 a) subject to its constitutional limitations, each Party shall adopt such measures as will ensure that cultivation, production, manufacture, extraction, preparation, possession, offering, offering for sale, distribution, purchase, sale, delivery on any terms whatsoever, brokerage, dispatch, dispatch in transit, transport, importation and exportation of drugs contrary to the provisions of this Convention, and any other action which in the opinion of such Party maybe contrary to the provisions of the Convention, shall be punishable offenses when committed intentionally, and that serious offenses shall be liable to adequate punishment particularly by imprisonment or other penalties of deprivation of liberty. Article 37: Seizure and Confiscation. Any drugs, substances and equipment used in or intended for the commission of any of the offences, referred to in article 36, shall be liable to seizure and confiscation. 2. I just found your website and thought I’d let you know that there is a microbrewery here in Vancouver BC Canada that produces a hemp ale. I think it is either Granville Island Brewing, Bowen Island Brewing Co., or one of the others in the area. Never tasted it but heard it’s a decent brew. They might be able to help you with finding THC free buds for your beer. Chris.
